This 3.5 hour-long Live Zoom class includes instruction, demonstration, and question + answer time. It will help you interpret photographs and help you to see what is needed to turn a photo into a painting. Looking at light and composition to develop into something amazing rather than ordinary.

This pastel workshop will help you understand the benefits of underpainting and mixed media with pastel, especially if you need surface texture. We will also cover Composition, Values, Colour Temperatures, Recession, Depth of Field and Movement.

Students will need, for each class:

  • Students will need  1 sheet of  WHITE Canson Touch (Tex).    I will be working on a sheet 450mm/500mm square roughly Click here for source
  • Printouts of reference material. (sent to registered students)
  • A Hard pastel such as Conte sticks. A white and Black. Click Here for source UK. I prefer the harder white as they dont fill the tooth of the paper.

  • A light turqouise tint
  • A medium turqouise
  • A dark turqouise
  • Dark Prussian Blue
  • An Ultramarine
  • A Phthalo Blue
  • A Blue Grey
  • Grey Greens
  • Grey Browns
  • Dark Brown
  • Soft White
  • Violet greys
I like to use some neutral colours for the rocks, so any blue greys, grey greens, grey browns, dark browns etc would be an advantage. Lots of turquoise and turqouise greens.

  • A Dark Blue Black
  • Bright Blue
  • Turquoise
  • Violet
  • Colbalt Blue
  • Lemon Yellow
  • Indian Red

The Inks I use are either Aquafine Inks from Daley Rowney, or Calligraphy Inks from Windsor and Newton. Jacksons in the UK have their own Inks which are very good. Must be Water based Inks, lightfast and permanent. You can choose your own brand.  I sometimes make my own colours with the Aquafine Inks. Add the Bright Blue to Black and I get my Blue Black

  • Ultramarine
  • Paynes Grey
  • Violet
